Gopichand Hinduja and his brother Sri are the wealthiest people in the UK
The 2022 Sunday Times Rich List has been released, which has revealed that billionaire brothers Sri and Gopi Hinduja are the wealthiest people in the UK. The pair own Mumbai-based conglomerate Hinduja Group, which saw their fortune rocket by more than £11 billion to a whopping £28.47 billion.
The annual list revealed there to be a record 177 billionaires in the UK. It features a number of familiar names, such as Dyson vacuum entrepreneur James Dyson - who moved up to second place after a £6.7 billion increase to £23 billion.
However, Former Governor of Chukotka, Roman Abramovich, slipped out of the top 20. Fellow Russians Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman also fell down the list after the value of their assets took a battering by financial measures due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Overall, the richest 250 in the UK this year are worth £710.72 billion, compared to £658.09 billion in 2021, an eight per cent rise on last year, the Sunday Times said.
The list was recently updated since publication earlier this year to move German businessman Christoph Henkel to number 18 on the list. It comes after The Sunday Times changed its assessment of the Henkels' wealth because the family own a smaller proportion of the company’s shares than had previously been understood.
