With increasing life expectancy and lifestyle-related diseases, India is witnessing a growing prevalence of kidney disease. Numerous community-based studies have shown that 13 to 17% of Indians have kidney disease. Worldwide, the commonest causes of kidney disease are diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure, both of which are rising over the last decade… Dr Ayan Kumar Dey, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician at P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, says, “While diabetes and high blood pressure remain the major cause of kidney disease, lifestyle issues such as surreptitious high salt intake, obesity and sedentary jobs also play a role. Rising prevalence of heart disease, indiscriminate use of over the-counter medications are also responsible. The city’s fast-paced life, along with inadequate physical activity and unhealthy dietary pat terns may also be contributing to rising kidney problems.
