Breast cancer incidence is rising. Chances are, you may know at least one person who has been personally affected by breast cancer. While that sounds disturbing, there is hope. When detected early, breast cancer has a high cure rate. Dr Ritika Harjani Hinduja, Consultant Radiation Oncology from P. D. Hinduja Hospital, shares, “Treatment typically comprises surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Radiation therapy, often referred to as radiotherapy, uses high doses of radiation (commonly X-rays) to kill or damage cancer cells, which prevents them from growing or dividing. It involves treating the whole breast with X-rays followed by supplementing dose to the excised tumour area. As our heart and lungs lie right behind the breast inside our rib cage, there remains a possibility of associated side-effects.
